Style Notes Guest Post :: Seeing Spots

Camille from Style Notes here, and I'm thrilled to be kicking off 2010 with a colorful party to start the year on a bright note. The idea for this fete began with these Damien Hirst-inspired notecards (above) Meg featured last week. I was so enamored, I thought: why not plan an entire party based on this bold, rainbow-hued motif?

A canopy of playful paper lanterns adds a bold punch to a dinner party or reception. Hang them in perfectly straight rows to keep the look sophisticated. Image: Rebecca Thuss.

Keep it simple by serving an array of hors d'oeuvres and refreshing cocktails. This Cucumber-Mint Gimlet is a sure crowd-pleaser, and mini vegetable crudites are a crunchy burst of color. Continue the polka dot motif with napkins in a shade that matches the drink for a graphic punch. These are from casparionline.com.

Encourage guests of all ages to embrace their inner child by setting up a carnival stand dessert buffet. Lemon snow cones, candied apples, swirly lollipops, & chocolate-dipped pretzels are sweet additions, & their diminutive sizes allow guests to sample them all. From Martha Stewart.

Ensure a cheerful end to the evening with colorful candied favors. Package them in polka-dot paper cones and boxes to keep the candy a surprise. Get the DIY instructions here & here.

Use circle punches & dot stickers from craft stores to adorn everything in site with spots. Seating cards, backed with red polka dot paper and tied with baker's twine, are clipped to a garden trellis with miniature clothespins for a simple yet striking display. From Snippet & Ink.

Since the hostess sets the tone, adorn yourself in festive accessories like jewel-toned baubles & a pop art-inspired bag. Pop C Wristlet, Coach.

*Hope today's post was a bright & cheerful start to your week & to a new year. Cheers to all!
