(New!) GSD // Grace of Stripes + Sequins

Today I'm kicking off a new series — GSD. It stands for Get Shit Done. I have done a few GSDesque posts here and here, but knew I wanted to take it to the next level. Now I could just sit here and ramble on (which I'm good at) about how I get shit done, but I thought we could all learn from each other. This way we can all get our shit done in a way the works best for us, but we can also reevaluate our process by seeing how other people do it and learn new apps and sites we don't already know about! A huge thanks to Grace for being my first GSD feature!

Name: Grace Atwood
Blog/Website: Stripes + Sequins
Day Job: Director of Social Media for BaubleBar.com

See how Grace gets shit done after the jump.

What does a typical day look like for you?
It's never really the same. I am not a morning person, but I try to hit the gym around 8 a.m. and get into work at 9:30 or so. Throughout the day, I'm in meetings, working on our marketing and partnership strategies, doing blogger outreach, reading blogs, and doing the usual stuff on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. I try to leave the BaubleBar office before 7 p.m. to get home to have dinner with my boyfriend.

Once I'm home, I usually do a little more BaubleBar work. On the blog front, I generally spend 2-3 hours a night working on my blog (creating content, shooting DIYs, and doing the business stuff — responding to emails, invoices, accounting, etc.).

I try to schedule a few off nights to do fun stuff, otherwise I'd go crazy and my boyfriend would probably kill me.  Summers are tough because we travel a lot on the weekends.  If I'm able to get blog work done over the weekend, weeks are a bit more mellow.  It's all about planning things out ahead of time.

What parts of your job do you love?
At BaubleBar, amongst other things, I love my coworkers — seriously, the best group of people ever. I thank the co-founders daily for hiring such cool people. I also love being a part of a start-up. You can really have a voice and make a difference. With blogging, it's also about the people. I've made so many incredible friendships. I also love how you can truly build something from nothing... taking a little piece of the Internet and making it your own.

What parts of your job do you dislike?
Really just the lack of free time. I truly love both jobs... but between the blog + "real job," it's been hard to find a balance. I'm tired quite a bit and I probably drink too much caffeine.

What things do you have to do that you didn't realize going into your job?
I didn't realize that social media never really sleeps. When you work for a brand, you always have to be at least somewhat "on." If someone were to post something nasty on my blog's Facebook page or twitter, I'd get to their response within a day or two. On the brand side, if someone complains on your wall, it's very public and the best brands deal with it immediately — or at least within an hour or two. I've found myself dealing with complaints at 1 a.m. on a Saturday (often under the influence of alcohol.) You really need to be on top of your game, and that can be hard, especially when balancing all the other stuff.

I also never thought that having a blog would be so time consuming. So much work and thought goes into each post... especially my DIY projects. If you choose to make it a business, there's an incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. You never realize it until you're in the thick of it... and then it's too late. ;)

What type of calendar do you keep?
I keep several — I use a Google calendar, a filofax to write things down, and have editorial / social media calendars in Excel for my blog and for BaubleBar. It's a big mix, but it works for me.

How do you plan out your calendar?
For the blog, I try to have regular features. In a perfect world, Mondays are DIY posts, Tuesday is a shopping post, Wednesday is beauty, Thursday is a color post, Friday is an outfit, and Saturday is my links round-up. That said, things change. I also keep a notebook on me at all times to write down random ideas for posts... because of that, I'm never really without ideas for blog content.

How do tackle and organize your to-do list?
I take (or at least try to take) everything one thing at a time. I have a big master goals list, and lots of smaller to-do lists. If I get overwhelmed, I take a step back and do a few small things that I can easily cross off of the list. Usually that gives me the motivation to handle a few of the larger items.

When you are stuck on a project, how do you get out of it? What do you do?
I switch gears and work on something else. Or I step out of the office / apartment. There's nothing a little iced coffee can't fix. I also love a good hot bath when all else fails.

How do you GSD at home (decorating, cleaning, etc.)?
Outsourcing helps. I am fairly neat and make it a point to pick up after myself, but I'm not a superhero. We have a cleaning lady. That feels indulgent, but it's worth it! For decorating, we've been working very closely with an amazing interior designer to revamp our apartment. I'm doing it with my boyfriend and she has connections + resources that we don't have. It also helps having someone unbiased — we have very different styles, so she's helped us to find a happy medium! Kids will come someday, and when that happens, everything will change — but we're not quite there yet.

Any other information about how you GSD, please share?
I might be repeating myself, but I really just try to take everything step by step and not beat myself up over the little things. Like Meg, and most of her readers, I am (probably overly) ambitious and always have a long list of things I want to do and achieve. Breaking things down month by month is helpful, too. For me personally, I've made a list of things I need to accomplish this summer, and I'll make another one for the Fall. Eventually I'll have everything done (and by then, a brand new set of goals!)

I also ask my GSD guests to list what their must-have apps, programs, tech items and programs are. This should be fun, right?

Apps you use frequently/can't live without:
Oh boy — this is a long list!
1. I am addicted to Instagram (and Picfx to add filters)
2. I have two twitter apps (Twitter + Echofon) to better manage both twitter accounts (@baublebar and @graceatwood)
3. TeuxDeux keeps me organized... (I love lists!)
4. I just discovered the Facebook Pages app which helps manage the BaubleBar and Stripes + Sequins pages on the go, and I love the Wordpress + Tumblr Apps for managing my blogs.
5. On a non-blogging note, I use the Seamless app constantly to order food, and the Groundlink app to book airport travel!

Websites you constantly use:
1. Teuxdeux.com keeps me organized (love the App, as mentioned above!) I actually don't use a ton of websites, now that I think about it.
2. I'm always on RewardStyle - besides using it for affiliate links, I like seeing what has recently sold... it's like a miniature trend report!
3. I'm also lost without my Google Reader — I try to keep it as edited as possible and am proud to say that I haven't "marked all as read" in quite some time.

Programs & technology you use:
1. At BaubleBar, we operate fully on Dropbox. I'd be lost without it!!! It's also been great for blogging — if I'm contributing to a site, I just set up a folder for them and invite them to join. It's so much easier than trying to email big photos.
2. I also love Google Documents

Your gadgets/tech items:
1. I'm an Apple girl, all the way. My iphone, my ipad, my Macbook Air, my tortoise incase (so sleek,) and this little handy dandy case by Mophie which charges my phone when I'm running low on battery. It's a lifesaver on days where I"m running from a day in the office to an event... at all day conferences, or when I'm traveling.
2. I also want to give Lo + Sons a shout-out... their travel bags are perfect for those of us who love our toys - built to last and with so many pockets... a place for every gadget!

Absolutely LOVE this new feature! Awesome. And, Grace has a gazillion wise words here. I often get that question, "how do you do it all?" (as a blogger, biz owner, mom, etc) however there's always SO much to learn from others. Thanks for starting this excellent series. I think I'll be pinning them all.

What a fantastic feature. It's so necessary! I love that you keep a cute little notepad with you to jot down ideas. I have a blog journal but it's too big and think I need to make it smaller so it goes everywhere with me! I'm looking forward to reading more! :)
